What We Do

Our Commitment

Modern Landfill is committed to being a good neighbor to our community and operating with environmental practices and policies that are good for our customers, local businesses and residents. Our local team of environmental managers, engineers and scientists ensures that the long-term management of the landfill materials is regenerative to the planet.

Initiatives

Modern Landfill is operated in a manner designed to protect public health and the environment. We regularly monitor and report our activities to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), and we strive to meet or exceed all state and federal regulations. All waste is disposed of within the boundary of a constructed landfill area that has been engineered to protect the environment and meets all federal, state and local regulations. There are many environmental protection systems at Modern Landfill.

The Modern Landfill team takes multiple steps to protect the environment. All waste is screened before it is accepted to ensure its safety, and our standard operating procedures are designed to exceed the PADEP standards. More than 500 acres of the Modern Landfill property are dedicated to non-landfill operations.

Protection of all water sources is a priority at Modern Landfill. The Landfill is designed with a highly engineered composite liner system designed to contain any liquids that percolate through the solid waste. The liquids are transferred to a water treatment facility. Surface water at the site is controlled through a series of diversion berms and drainage ditches to preserve its quality. In addition, Modern Landfill assesses groundwater with 78 individual groundwater monitoring wells. Each well is routinely tested to verify the groundwater’s safety.

Modern Landfill gas is collected through a system of 251 extraction wells. In addition, the Landfill’s surface and exterior gas probes are also regularly monitored to ensure the landfill gas system is operating properly.
